Grand Canyon/Monument Valley - Day 50

View Paul & Cath on holteend's travel map.

Woke up and had breakfast we then took down the tents and packed up the van.

We then set off to Monument Valley which took a few hours. On the way we stopped off at a big Navajo store that sold lots of items from dreamcatchers to bows and arrows! We both bought a cowboy hat each. After we carried on our journey to Monument Valley. When we got there we had a look around the visitors centre and a few people bought some souvenirs.

After a little while our tour guide arrived to take us through the Valley. We had paid for a Navajo Indian to take us around in a 4X4 type vehicle with on open top and sides. The roads that he took us around on were okay but still quite bumpy and dusty - good job we had our new hats! The guy took us deep into the valley stopping off at various rock formations and talking to us about them and the names that the Indians had given them. After a while we all got out and all went inside a big area which was like a cave but with a open face. We all sat on the rock inside and then the guide played instruments and sang some traditional Navajo songs which was really cool. We then got back inside the truck and pulled up alongside a massive sand hill. Chris said that people had to go up to the top and run down the hill. Most of the lads went up and ran down - when it came to Rob's turn he decided to roll down and got covered in sand!

We then went and saw a lady who made rugs - she was in a mud hut type thing and was making a rug - she was about 100! She then put a ribbon in Courtney's hair - she combed it with a stick brush! The guide then took us to a place where food was set up - we were fed Navajo Tacos and salad (Paul obviously didn't have the salad!). The tacos were like a massive piece of fried bread with chilli on top. Paul went and had seconds - all of the Indians and Chris said that they had never seen anyone have 2 before!

Our guide then took us back to the van and we set off for the campsite. The tents were set up in the dark which was 'interesting'! We then had a few beers which had to be disguised because it was a dry campsite. Chris then taught the group how to play the card game shithead which we played for a couple of hours before it was time for bed.

Katrine asked Paul if he wanted to sleep outside - Paul asked Catherine and they all decided to. We moved from where we originally set up because of wild dogs roaming around. When we finally settled we saw lots of shooting stars and had no problems getting to sleep.
