New Orleans - Day 26

sunny

Woke up and made our way down to the banks of the Mississippi River to get on a Steamboat tour. It took us down the Mississippi and gave us some commentary along the way. It seems that Hurricane Katrina still is having an impact on the city - before it hit 50% of the coffee in the US came through New Orleans - however we went past the warehouses that the coffee used to get unpacked at and they are still just a burnt down shell.

The River looked quite calm but the person doing the commentary told us the river is up to 200 feet deep in parts and has a really strong undercurrent - no wonder it is called the mighty Mississippi! We had something to eat on the boat - wasn't the best but it will have to do!

After we got off the boat we went to an aquarium which was really good - they had one massive tank that was made to look like an oil rig and it was on two levels so you could see above the water then you could go downstairs and see under the water. It had about 5 sharks in plus loads of other fish and some sea turtles. Paul has decided that if he ever wins the lottery he is going to get on of these!

We then went into the Casino next door and quickly lost about £30 on roulette and the slot machines - after Catherine told me to play slow on the roulette she put about half of our chips on Odd on the first go - needless to say the ball landed on an even number! When we lost our money we had a stroll back to our hotel and picked up some beers - Catherine commented to me that all of the shop smelt damp - I don't think she realises that if a whole city gets flooded for weeks then it might not smell too fresh!

After that we made our way back to take our places for the moment Catherine said that she had been waiting 3 years for - the return of Britney! We watched her perform at the Video Music Awards - Paul thought it was a horrendous performance - Catherine said that she would like to see it again before she made her mind up!

Paul then realised that his legs were red raw and sunburnt! That will teach him for not letting Catherine put suncream on his legs when they were on the boat! After the excitement of seeing Britney we went to bed.
